How Felimazole® offers certainty for vets and owners

Dechra Veterinary Products says new research1 shows that their award-winning treatment for cats with hyperthyroidism offers ease of use for owners and certainty to vets that animals are getting the correct dose of medication.

A survey of cat owners found that an overwhelming majority of those who gave tablets to treat their pet’s hyperthyroidism found it easy to do so.

Administering the medication in tablet form also means both owners and vets can be certain that cats are getting the correct dose of medication to treat the long-term condition.

Felimazole® - which last year won the Easy to Give award from the charity International Cat Care – is a tablet presentation, designed to be simple to administer and to take the stress out of regular dosing.

The new research shows that 80% of cat owners giving a tablet to treat hyperthyroidism find it either extremely easy to medicate their cat or have only an occasional struggle to do so.

It also demonstrated that owners have no more difficulty administering tablets than they do liquid medication, and that some owners are administering liquids by putting it on food, which can raise a question around compliance.

Dechra Brand Manager Claire Morgan said the research also found that 91% of cat owners had high levels of confidence that their cat was receiving the correct dose when giving a tablet.

“These findings show that prescribing a tablet such as Felimazole offers both stress-free treatment for the cat and ease-of-use for the owner, which is hugely important when treating a long-term condition such as hyperthyroidism.

“It also shows that with Felimazole both the vet and owner can be confident that the medication is being administered correctly. That’s why we believe Felimazole should be a vet’s first choice for certainty.”

Felimazole can be prescribed as part of a long-term treatment plan for cats with hyperthyroidism. Its active ingredient is thiamazole and it is available in 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg and 5 mg doses.

The three tablet sizes offer certainty about accurate dose titration, with once daily dosing aiding compliance and twice daily dosing for control.

The size and shape of Felimazole tablets have been designed to help make it easier for owners to medicate their cats, taking much of the stress out of regular dosing.
